Chemistry

Chemistry explores the structure of the atom, forming molecules, and the types and uses of chemical reactions. This course is typically offered to students that have taken Biology. Students will develop an understanding of how atoms and molecules form, why elements behave the way they do and common uses of chemistry in our everyday lives. Students generate Unit Focus Questions that guide activities and research. Projects include researching an element and its uses, teacher guided lab activities, student designed lab activities, and research activities. Topics covered include structure of the atom and electron configuration, ionic and molecular compounds, the mole, chemical reactions, hydrocarbons, states of matter and the gas laws, electrochemistry and nuclear chemistry.
